Explore Addu Cuisine at Equator Village
When visiting the Maldives, it’s easy to get swept up by the white sand beaches, turquoise lagoons, and serene sunsets. But at Equator Village, nestled in the southernmost atoll of the Maldives, there’s a different kind of treasure to discover – its deeply rooted local cuisine.
Addu Atoll, with its distinct history and culture, offers a culinary experience that stands apart from the rest of the country. At Equator Village, we invite our guests to savour these unique southern flavours.
What Makes Addu Cuisine Special?
Addu’s food reflects a way of life that’s closely tied to tradition, trade, and the surrounding sea. Compared to the central atolls, the cuisine here is bolder, often richer in spices, and deeply influenced by generations of local knowledge.
Some of the most cherished dishes from Addu include:
- Addu Havaadhu – A traditional curry paste made using dry-roasted spices like chilli, fennel, cumin, coriander seeds, and grated coconut. Used in everything from fish to chicken, this aromatic blend gives southern curries their signature flavour.
- Addu Reha – A thick, spiced tuna curry made with Addu Havaadhu and coconut milk. It’s rich, fragrant, and a staple dish in most Addu households.
- Addu Bendi – A sticky, sweet delicacy made from coconut and palm sugar, wrapped in dried banana leaves. This humble yet delicious sweet is a symbol of southern hospitality.

- Fried Snacks – Fried breadfruit and taro chips are local favourites, often enjoyed with tea during the afternoon. Alongside it, snacks like gulha, bajiya, and keemiyaa offer a true taste of Maldivian hospitality.
